Today we meet Alastair Cameron, our recently appointed Director of Oakwood Scotland Solicitors!
Name:
Alastair Cameron
Job title:
Director – Oakwood Scotland Solicitors
How long have you been qualified and what is your legal background?
“Qualified for more years than I care to remember….but been in the legal profession for 26 years! Background: I have worked for several firms in Glasgow as I progressed my career and became involved in training new Trainee Solicitors to qualification.
“I also tutored at University of Strathclyde for several years on personal injury. Been involved in high profile child abuse inquiries acting for whistleblowers and victims.
“I have always acted for Pursuers and felt that to be the right side for me as I believe in justice, and it being seen to be done. I am probably pragmatic and pedantic in good measure and that brings a respect from fellow Solicitors who are opposing me.”
Where did you work before and what was your role?
“Prior to joining Oakwood Scotland Solicitors I was a Senior Solicitor at Gildeas and had a caseload of mixed RTA work and other civil work. I was involved in the training of the new Trainee Solicitors and provided support and assistance to Team Members. It was a rewarding and enjoyable experience.”
What is it that you love about working in law?
“I came into law to help people and that is why I have always had client facing roles, and not been backstaff lost in a large corporate type of entity. I enjoy the interaction with clients and achieving results for them.
“Advocacy is my passion, and I love the cut and thrust of being in court, running proofs or debates. That is what I trained for and the enjoyment from that never wanes. Also being able to help people who need legal support but not necessarily able to afford representation.
“People such as Veterans who face an uphill challenge and like many others suffer from mental illness and physical injury making them less able to formulate their argument or response in a dispute. The law should work for everyone, rich man or poor man and that has always been my mantra.”
What are you hoping to achieve at Oakwood Scotland Solicitors?
“Oakwood Scotland Solicitors has let me achieve what I have always wanted to achieve, namely being in charge of my own destiny. The ability to grow Oakwood Scotland Solicitors with all the back-up and support of a major law firm. Choosing staff that are like-minded, focused, and driven to achieve.
“The difference between Oakwood Scotland Solicitors and other firms is palpable, and clients are always commenting positively on our brand. In a crowded market I want Oakwood Scotland Solicitors to stand head and shoulders above its competitors.”
Is there anything you are particularly excited about having joined Oakwood?
“To be frank, everything. From cracking colleagues in Scotland and Leeds to state-of-the-art IT and being surrounded by positive people. I love the new Glasgow office, bright airy and very modern.
“My glass is always half full and never half empty and that ethos is throughout the organisation. The excitement comes from the energy and enthusiasm of my colleagues and their professionalism. There is a dynamic that I have never experienced before and that what makes every day a great day!”
