This Halloween driving rule could land Scots a £5k fine

Halloween is just around the corner, and shops are brimming with spooky costumes and sweet treats for trick-or-treaters.

However, as the celebrations approach, Scots should be aware of a driving rule that could result in serious consequences if not followed.

Halloween driving

You might be tempted to jump in the car wearing your costume or a creepy mask to give fellow drivers or pedestrians a fright. But be warned, there’s a little-known rule that could see you hit with a hefty fine for doing so.

While it may seem like harmless fun, you could end up with a £5,000 fine if caught by the police. The Highway Code states that drivers must avoid wearing anything that could “restrict their vision.”

This rule typically applies to visors or tinted sunglasses, but it also covers Halloween masks like a ghastly scream face or zombie prosthetics—so it’s best to save those for the party.

It’s not just masks and headgear you need to think about. Rule 97 of the Highway Code advises against wearing clothing or footwear that might “prevent you from using the controls properly.” So, your Mummy costume or oversized clown shoes might need to stay in the back seat until you reach your destination.

What’s the penalty if I’m caught?

While Halloween encourages a bit of fun, safety on the road should always come first. These regulations are designed to protect everyone, explained Majid Ismailzada, Marketing Director and Motoring Expert at GM Direct Hire. “If you’re pulled over, expect to face the consequences, which could include a hefty fine,” he added.

According to Insurance Edge, failing to maintain a clear view of the road could result in up to 11 penalty points and a fine of as much as £5,000—a steep price to pay for a costume. Driving in inappropriate footwear or being unable to fasten your seatbelt could also cost you, with a £100 fine and potentially even penalty points.
